Civics and Citizenship - Working collaboratively with Outreach Education
This Weebly has been created with 'Outreach Project'. It is a work in progress and will be continually updated and refined as we collaborate and reflect on our teaching practice. Collaboration between Peter Cavouras from Outreach and teachers from the Northern Adelaide region has been critical in the development of this unit of work. The aim of the project is to engage learners in the topic Civics and Citizenship. The unit has underpinning it the Australian curriculum, Tfel design and the philosophy of Outreach Education. Below is an extract taken from the Outreach Education Website which briefly outlines the aspects of the program.
Outreach Education is a team of specialist teachers employed by the South Australian Department for Education and Child Development (DECD). They are placed within various public organisations to develop F–12 programs for schools that will improve student learning outcomes and support teachers.
The programs are aligned with education department priorities and designed to engage learners using the unique collections, resources and expertise at those organisations.
Some information about the professional learning community;
Deana Cuconits is an Early Career Teacher who has been working at Parafield Gardens R-7 School since completing her degree in education 4 years ago. Her passion is promoting critical and creative thinking with Upper Primary and Middle Years students through developing Higher Order Thinking skills. Authentic learning experiences are an important element of her pedagogy. Interacting with the community and experiencing its past and present history first hand creates powerful learners with a deeper conceptual understanding.
Sandra Siladji is an AST2 Mentor who has been working with children from 3 months to 14 years for 24 years. She has been based at Parafield Gardens R-7 since 1999 teaching Primary and Middle years students. She is currently working with Middle years students. Students view her as a life long learner who does not have the answer to every question. In her practice she helps students to reflect on their learning and promotes a social environment where students can be the experts, they question each other and asking for help is okay.
Raelene White has been working as a teacher in the northern suburbs for 15 years and believes in the benefits of providing students with real life and cultural experiences. It is important for students to develop trust and a sense of wonder about what the community has to offer if they are to develop into citizens who care about the world around them and understand their role as part of human endeavour, knowing they can aspire to achieve great things.
Peter Cavouras is a specialist teacher from the Department for Education and Child Development and is based in the Adelaide Magistrates Court to produce and deliver Australian Curriculum aligned education programs to visiting classes. These programs are designed to help students understand the way in which courts work, in particular the role played by courts as ethical decision-makers. While most programs are based in the Adelaide Magistrates Courts, other court locations can be the focus of the visit.
